Holidays at Longwood Gardens

A Philadelphia area institution since the 18th century, Longwood Gardens showcases its brilliant celebratory holiday traditions this 2013 with the return of A Longwood Christmas.  Lasting until the 12th of January, this year’s grounds are fully bedecked inside and out.  Inside the conservatory, exotic fruit-filed trees—some nearly 20 feet tall—tower over the sunken marble floors.  In the Exhibition Hall, an artistic display of red and green apples adorns the neoclassical flourishes; the Music Room features even more fruit-bearing plants and trees.  Outside, the sprawling grounds are specked with lights and color.  Stroll the grounds amongst floating tree displays, sparkling snowflakes, and a 12-foot fountain of lights in the main outdoor garden.

Tours of the iconic Longwood grounds are most common, though during the holiday season, other offerings and events make for a truly magical experience.  A short drive from The Rittenhouse, Longwood Gardens free daily Christmas performances for the duration of the holiday season, as well as organ sing-alongs.  The Open Air Theater likewise showcases an elaborate and brilliant illuminated fountain show, with 750 jets set to holiday music.  Outdoor lights come on at 3:30 every day, so you’ll always have a chance to experience the grandeur and magic of the Longwood Gardens grounds.
